Shinkansen Green Car vs Ordinary Car: What It Actually Costs

Key takeaways
- Green Car guarantees a power outlet at every seat; ordinary reserved cars only wire window seats and the very front and back rows.
- The Green Car premium is a fixed yen amount by route, not by train: ¥4,870 more on Tokyo–Kyoto and Tokyo–Shin-Osaka, ¥3,660 more on Tokyo–Nagoya, whether you ride Nozomi or Hikari.
- Fares below are current as of September 2026, from JR Central’s smartEX tables effective April 1, 2025.

Quick verdict: when the upgrade earns its price
The Green Car surcharge is a flat amount per route rather than per train, so it costs the same whether you book the fast Nozomi or the slower Hikari. On the short Tokyo–Nagoya leg, that flat fee is a bigger slice of the ticket. On the longer legs of the corridor, the same fee buys the same guaranteed outlet for proportionally less.
Pick Green Car if you need a guaranteed power outlet, you are riding Tokyo–Kyoto or further, or you want to order food from your seat instead of walking to the trolley cart.
Pick ordinary reserved if you are making the short Tokyo–Nagoya hop, traveling with kids who do not need the extra room, or fine carrying a power bank instead of paying for a guaranteed plug.
What Green Car costs vs ordinary reserved on the corridor
On a Nozomi or Mizuho, one adult reserved seat from Tokyo to Nagoya costs ¥11,100 one-way[1], and the Green Car seat on the same train costs ¥14,760[2].

Tokyo to Kyoto is ¥13,970 ordinary[1] against ¥18,840 Green Car[2].
Tokyo to Shin-Osaka is ¥14,520 ordinary[1] against ¥19,390 Green Car[2].
| Criterion | Green Car | Ordinary reserved |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo–Nagoya, Nozomi, adult, one-way | ¥14,760[2] | ¥11,100[1] |
| Tokyo–Kyoto, Nozomi, adult, one-way | ¥18,840[2] | ¥13,970[1] |
| Tokyo–Shin-Osaka, Nozomi, adult, one-way | ¥19,390[2] | ¥14,520[1] |
| Power outlets | Every seat[3] | Window and end-of-car seats only[3] |
| Oversized-baggage reservation | Same rule, ¥1,000 fine if skipped[5] | Same rule, ¥1,000 fine if skipped[5] |
| Off-peak to super-peak season swing | −¥200 to +¥400[2] | −¥200 to +¥400[1] |
Switch to a Hikari instead of a Nozomi and the ordinary fare drops, but the Green Car premium does not move. Tokyo–Nagoya on Hikari is ¥10,890 ordinary[1] against ¥14,550 Green Car[2], a ¥3,660 gap, identical to the Nozomi gap on the same city pair.
Prices also shift by season on top of the base fare. Off-peak dates cut ¥200 from the listed fare[1], peak dates add ¥200[1], and the super-peak dates around New Year and Obon add ¥400[1]. The same three-tier adjustment applies to Green Car fares[2].
The real bill for two, or three
The fares above are per person, one-way. Add them up for a couple or a family and the gap changes shape.

On the Tokyo–Nagoya Hikari used in the family scenario below, the child fare is ¥5,440 ordinary[1] or ¥9,370 Green Car[2].
| Line item | Solo, Tokyo→Kyoto, Nozomi | Couple, round-trip Tokyo↔Shin-Osaka, Nozomi | 2 adults + 1 child, Tokyo→Nagoya, Hikari |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary reserved fare | ¥13,970[1] | ¥14,520 × 2 legs × 2 people[1] | ¥10,890 × 2 adults + ¥5,440 child[1] |
| Green Car fare | ¥18,840[2] | ¥19,390 × 2 legs × 2 people[2] | ¥14,550 × 2 adults + ¥9,370 child[2] |
| Extra cost of upgrading | ¥4,870 | ¥19,480 | ¥11,250 |
The math is in the table above: buy Green Car for the couple’s round trip or the family’s one-way, and the premium adds up fast once everyone in the group is counted. For a longer family trip, Japan Train Travel With Kids covers age brackets and pass rules in more detail.
What the extra yen buys beyond the seat
Every Green Car seat has its own power outlet[3]. Ordinary reserved cars only wire the window seats and the seats at the very front and back of the car[3], so an aisle or middle seat may leave you without a plug.
Green Car passengers on Nozomi and Hikari services can also order snacks and drinks from their phone instead of walking to the trolley cart[4].
The oversized-baggage rule applies to both classes
Bags with a total of three dimensions over 160 cm (63 inches) need a free seat-with-oversized-baggage-area reservation, in either Green Car or ordinary reserved[5]. Skip it and JR Central charges 1,000 yen including tax[5] when you board.
Upgrading to Green Car does not remove this requirement, and booking ordinary reserved does not add to it. Decide the baggage reservation separately from the seat class.
When ordinary reserved is the smarter pick
On the short Tokyo–Nagoya leg, the same guaranteed outlet costs proportionally more per hour of travel than it does on the longer legs of the corridor, since the Green Car premium is a flat fee regardless of distance. A traveler with a laptop that is already charged, or a family juggling luggage and kids rather than working onboard, gets less from the swap on that route. For choosing between the trains themselves rather than the car class, see Nozomi vs Hikari vs Kodama fares.
How to book Green Car, and the JR Pass trap
JR Central sells both car classes through its smartEX online service[6], which requires a credit card to register[7].

A Japan Rail Pass with the Green option costs ¥70,000 for seven days, against ¥50,000 for the ordinary-car pass[8].
The trap: even Green Pass holders need a separate paid ticket to ride Nozomi or Mizuho trains[8], so a pass alone does not cover the fastest service on this corridor.
From October 1, 2026, a new Supreme Class sits above Green Car on the Tokaido Shinkansen, with private cabins from ¥42,390 one-way Tokyo–Shin-Osaka[9].
Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between Green Car and Gran Class?
Gran Class does not run on the Tokaido Shinkansen. From October 1, 2026, JR Central’s Supreme Class takes that top-tier slot instead, with private single or two-guest cabins starting at ¥42,390 one-way Tokyo–Shin-Osaka[9].
Do children pay the same Green Car fare as adults?
No, but the discount is smaller than on ordinary reserved. On Tokyo–Kyoto, a child pays ¥6,980 against an adult’s ¥13,970 in ordinary reserved, almost exactly half[1]. In Green Car, a child pays ¥12,120 against an adult’s ¥18,840, about 64% of the adult fare[2].
