Hakone Freepass Price and Break-Even Math, Explained

  • A solo day-tripper on the full Golden Course loop pays ¥7,100 for the 2-day Freepass from Shinjuku, versus roughly ¥9,360 buying each leg separately.[1][3][10][11]
  • The biggest line item in any à la carte comparison is the Hakone Ropeway and Sightseeing Cruise round trips, about ¥6,000 combined for one adult.[3]
  • The cheapest realistic option for a family starting in Hakone itself is the Odawara-area 2-day pass at ¥6,000 per adult and ¥1,500 per child.[2][3]

An October 2025 fare amendment raised the ropeway, the sightseeing cruise and every version of the pass itself.[3] Several older guides still quote the 2-day Odawara pass at ¥5,000 and the Shinjuku pass at ¥6,100, figures that stopped applying once the amendment took effect.[3]

The Freepass pays off on a full one-day loop

The gap in the cost table below holds only when a day includes both the ropeway and the cruise. Skip either one and the pass stops paying for itself as clearly.

Stat cards showing the Hakone Freepass costs ¥7,100 versus ¥9,360 paying separately, a ¥2,260 saving.

What the Freepass covers

The pass gives unlimited rides on 8 types of transport.[2] That list includes the Odakyu Line between Shinjuku and Odawara, the Hakone Tozan Railway, the Tozan Cable Car, the Hakone Ropeway, Tozan buses and the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise.

It also unlocks discounted entry at close to 70 tourist facilities.[1] The cable car between Gora and Sounzan climbs about 209 meters in altitude.[5]

Travelers starting from Shinjuku can also use the Odakyu Highway Bus to Gotemba for ¥1,000 with the Freepass, against a regular adult fare of ¥2,000.[2]

2026 Freepass prices, Shinjuku vs Odawara

The pass costs more from Shinjuku because it bundles the Odakyu Line round trip to Odawara. Departing from inside Hakone costs less since that leg is not included.

Comparison table of Hakone Freepass adult and child prices for 2-day and 3-day passes departing from Shinjuku versus Odawara.
Hakone Freepass Prices by Departure Point (Odakyu Railway; Hakone Navi · 2026.09 기준)
Pass Adult Child (6–11)
2-day, from Shinjuku ¥7,100 ¥1,600
3-day, from Shinjuku ¥7,500 ¥1,850
2-day, from Odawara/Hakone area ¥6,000 ¥1,500
3-day, from Odawara/Hakone area ¥6,400 ¥1,750

All four prices are current as of the October 2025 amendment.[1][2] The 3-day version costs ¥400 more than the 2-day version at every departure point; the transport coverage itself is identical.[2] Before the amendment, the 2-day Odawara pass cost ¥5,000 for adults and ¥1,000 for children, up ¥1,000 and ¥500.[3]

What it actually costs: three one-day scenarios

Every line below is a round trip unless noted, and each figure is sourced separately rather than folded into one estimated total.

Bar chart comparing pay-as-you-go totals: ¥9,360 for a solo rider on regular trains, ¥10,560 with a Romancecar leg, and ¥18,160 for a family of three.
À La Carte Cost Across Three Scenarios (Ekitan fare search; Hakone Navi; Odakyu Railway · 2026.09 기준)
Line item Solo, regular train Solo, Romancecar one-way Family of 3, Odawara loop
Tokyo–Odawara rail ¥1,820[10] ¥3,020[4][10] not needed
Hakone Tozan Railway (Odawara–Gora) ¥1,540[11] ¥1,540[11] ¥3,860[6][11]
Hakone Ropeway (Sounzan–Togendai) ¥3,000[3] ¥3,000[3] ¥7,000[3]
Sightseeing Cruise (Togendai–Hakonemachi) ¥3,000[3] ¥3,000[3] ¥7,300[3]
Pay-as-you-go total ¥9,360 ¥10,560 ¥18,160
Hakone Freepass ¥7,100[1] ¥8,300[4] ¥13,500[2]
Savings with Freepass ¥2,260 ¥2,260 ¥4,660

Solo, regular train: the Odakyu Line Shinjuku–Odawara round trip runs ¥910 each way, ¥1,820 total.[10] Add the Tozan Railway Odawara–Gora round trip at ¥1,540,[11] the ropeway round trip at ¥3,000,[3] and the cruise round trip at ¥3,000.[3] That is ¥1,820 + ¥1,540 + ¥3,000 + ¥3,000 = ¥9,360, against a ¥7,100 Freepass.[1]

Romancecar one-way: swap one Odakyu leg for a Romancecar ride and the fare rises by exactly the ¥1,200 surcharge on both sides of the comparison.[4] Odakyu’s own combination pricing shows Freepass ¥7,100 plus a one-way Romancecar ticket coming to ¥8,300.[4] The pay-as-you-go side rises the same amount, so the gap holds at ¥2,260.

Family scenario: two adults and one child buying the Odawara-area 2-day Freepass pay ¥6,000 × 2 + ¥1,500 = ¥13,500.[2] Separate tickets for the same loop, including a child Tozan Railway fare set at half the adult rate and rounded up,[6] add up to ¥18,160.

When the Freepass doesn’t pay off

A short visit built around one attraction rarely clears the price of the pass. A one-way ropeway ride alone costs ¥2,000 for an adult,[3] far below the ¥6,000–7,100 pass price. The pass only wins once a visitor rides both the ropeway and the cruise, ideally round trip on each.

Adding the Romancecar changes the total, not the gap

Riding the Romancecar one-way from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto takes about 80 minutes with reserved seating.[1] It requires both the ¥1,200 surcharge and a regular fare ticket, or a discount pass used in place of that ticket.[4] Buying an e-ticket through EMot Online Tickets saves ¥50 on that surcharge.[4]

Where to buy it before boarding

The Freepass is sold at ticket machines in every Odakyu Line station and at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Centers in Shinjuku and Odawara.[7] It is also available anytime through Odakyu’s EMot Online Tickets service.[8]

It is a physical or digital ticket bought before travel, not a top-up added to a Suica, Pasmo or Welcome Suica card.[2] It will not scan at an IC card gate, so carry it separately from any IC card used for other travel.

FAQ

Is the Freepass worth it for just one day?

Yes, if the day includes the ropeway and the cruise. Odakyu’s own materials call it worth it even for a day trip.[1] The math above shows why: those two rides alone cost close to ¥6,000 round trip for one adult.[3]

Hakone Freepass or Fuji Hakone Pass, which fits better?

The Fuji Hakone Pass costs ¥11,100 for adults and ¥3,600 for children, valid three days.[9] It also adds Fujikyu Railway and Fujikyu Bus service around Mount Fuji to the same Hakone network. Choose it only if the itinerary reaches the Fuji Five Lakes area; otherwise consider booking a separate Mt. Fuji day trip from Shinjuku.

Does the pass cover children, and what do they pay?

Child fares apply from age 6 to 11.[6] The 2-day Odawara-area child fare rose from ¥1,000 to ¥1,500 in the October 2025 amendment, a 50% increase.[3]
