Kansai Area Pass vs Kansai Wide Area Pass: Which One Pays Off for Osaka, Kyoto, Himeji and Kinosaki?

Key takeaways
- Most Osaka/Kyoto/Himeji itineraries beat both passes on separate tickets; only a Kinosaki Onsen overnight or heavy Sanyo Shinkansen use justifies the Kansai Wide Area Pass.
- The Wide Area Pass costs ¥12,000[2], and a one-way Osaka-Himeji ride alone costs ¥1,460[6], so one Himeji day trip covers less than a quarter of the pass.
- Figures below are as of early September 2026.

2026 shift: the paper pass closes, WEST QR replaces it
JR West is retiring the paper Kansai Area Pass. Exchange vouchers stop being issued on June 30, 2026[7]. Station exchange ends September 29, 2026, and any remaining pass must be used by November 1, 2026[7]. The 4-day version can start no later than October 29, 2026[7]. Its replacement, the WEST QR Kansai Area Pass, is a phone-based QR ticket sold from December 19, 2025, at the same duration tiers[3].

What’s actually included: Himeji, Kinosaki and the Shinkansen
| Criteria | Kansai Area Pass (paper, closing) | WEST QR Kansai Area Pass | Kansai Wide Area Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2/3/4-day adult price | ¥2,800 / ¥4,800 / ¥5,800 / ¥7,000[1] | ¥2,700 / ¥4,700 / ¥5,500 / ¥6,700[3] | 5-day only: ¥12,000[2] |
| Child price (same tiers) | ¥1,400 / ¥2,400 / ¥2,900 / ¥3,500[1] | ¥1,350 / ¥2,350 / ¥2,750 / ¥3,350[3] | ¥6,000[2] |
| Shinkansen | Not included[1] | Not included, even with extra fare[3] | Sanyo section, Shin-Osaka to Okayama only[2] |
| Himeji | Included[1] | Same free-travel network as the paper pass[3] | Included[2] |
| Kinosaki Onsen (Kounotori) | Not included[1] | Not included[3] | Included[2] |
| Eligibility | Foreign passport at exchange[1] | Foreign passport at exchange[3] | Foreign passport at exchange[2] |
Only the Kansai Wide Area Pass lists the Limited Express KONOTORI among its included trains, alongside HARUKA, KUROSHIO and SUPER HAKUTO[2]. Book those seats ahead. JR West tells pass holders to reserve limited express seating before boarding[2].

What Himeji and the airport transfer cost as separate tickets
A one-way ride from Osaka to Himeji cost ¥1,520 until JR West’s April 2025 fare revision cut it to ¥1,460[6]. The discounted HARUKA one-way from Kansai Airport is ¥2,200 to Kyoto and ¥1,800 to Osaka or Shin-Osaka[4], for holders of a foreign passport entering as a temporary visitor. The limousine bus costs ¥2,800 to Kyoto Station in about 85–90 minutes, or ¥1,800 to Osaka Station in about 60 minutes[8][9]. The discounted Sanyo Shinkansen fare from Shin-Osaka to Okayama or Kurashiki is ¥5,100[5].
What it actually costs: three scenarios, September 2026
| Line item | Solo, 3 days, no Kinosaki | Couple, 5 days, with Kinosaki | Solo via KIX, 4 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pass price | WEST QR 3-day: ¥5,500[3] | Wide Area Pass ×2: ¥24,000[2] | WEST QR 4-day: ¥6,700[3] |
| Himeji round trip | ¥1,460×2 = ¥2,920[6] | ¥2,920×2 = ¥5,840[6] | ¥2,920[6] |
| HARUKA in/out (KIX) | n/a | n/a | ¥2,200×2 = ¥4,400[4] |
| Kinosaki (Kounotori, reserved-only, not on cheaper passes) | n/a | required both ways, per person[2] | n/a |
| Verdict | Separate tickets win; the pass would need far more riding to break even | Himeji alone doesn’t justify the pass, but the required Kinosaki fares close most of the gap | Separate tickets already cost more than the pass, before Nara is even added |
For the solo 3-day trip, ¥1,460 × 2 = ¥2,920[6], short of the ¥5,500 pass price[3]. For the KIX arrival, ¥2,200 × 2 + ¥2,920 = ¥7,320[4][6], already above the ¥6,700 pass[3].

Pick the Wide Area Pass, WEST QR, or neither
Pick the Kansai Wide Area Pass if your itinerary includes a Kinosaki Onsen overnight, since it is the only product that includes the Kounotori limited express at all[2]. Pick it too if you are also riding the Sanyo Shinkansen toward Okayama, where the discounted one-way fare alone is ¥5,100[5].
Pick the WEST QR Kansai Area Pass if you are flying into Kansai Airport and adding at least one day trip, such as Himeji. The HARUKA transfer plus that day trip alone can clear the 3- or 4-day price[3][4][6].
Pick neither if your trip stays inside Osaka and Kyoto, with at most one Himeji day trip and light local rail use. Buy an ICOCA card and pay as you go instead. Most in-city sightseeing runs on subway and private-rail lines that no JR West pass covers anyway. The Kyoto bus and subway pass guide covers what pays off for those local rides.
How to buy and who is eligible
All three passes require a passport at exchange, and only travelers holding a foreign passport can use them[1][2][3]. Japanese nationals are not eligible, regardless of residency. Adult pricing applies from age 12, child pricing from age 6 to 11[1]. Buy through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION or an overseas travel agency before you exchange in Japan. An unexchanged voucher can only be refunded at the agency that sold it, minus a handling fee[1][2].
ICOCA, reservations and the Kinosaki overnight
An ICOCA IC card is not a substitute for either pass on Shinkansen or limited-express legs. JR West states plainly that “ICOCA cannot be used on Shinkansen trains”[10], and the same applies to boarding a reserved-only limited express like Kounotori without a ticket. Reserve those seats ahead of the trip rather than at the gate, since the pass grants unlimited use but not a guaranteed seat[2].
For the overnight bag, keep the same seat-reservation habit you would use for a Shinkansen leg. See the Shinkansen oversized baggage guide if you are carrying a large suitcase to the onsen town.
Worth it just for Himeji and Kinosaki?
Only if you are traveling as a pair or more. The Himeji round trip alone is ¥2,920[6], well under the ¥12,000 pass price[2]. The pass only clears break-even once the unavoidable Kounotori fare to Kinosaki is added on top.
Can I use it on the Shinkansen to Tokyo?
No. The pass covers the Sanyo Shinkansen section between Shin-Osaka and Okayama only, and JR West lists the Tokaido Shinkansen toward Tokyo as excluded[2].
